‘Twas the Night Before Move-In

August 24th, 2014 akolso17

Hello Everyone!

With just 7 days until I can FINALLY go back to Holy Cross, I thought I would share my little parody of Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” This is a reflection of how I felt as an excited, lost, and frightened first year student.

‘Twas the Night Before Move-In

‘Twas the night before move-in and in the hotel
My parents slept soundly while I was in hell.
The boxes were stacked in the Tucson with care,
After one thousand miles I was almost there!

I lay awake on top of the bed
Whilst visions of college danced in my head.
Thoughts of essays and classes to come,
Lots of friends and plenty of fun!

When at 6 AM brrring rang my phone!
Nervous, excited, I let out a groan!
Down to the lot I jumped in the car
HC was so near and home so far!

The sun in the sky shone down on The Hill
We pulled up to Wheeler; my gosh! What a thrill!
When what to my wondering eyes did appear
But RAs and OLs shouting a cheer!

They moved in my stuff so helpful and quick
I knew Holy Cross was the right pick.
Friendly and kind, “Welcome!” They proclaimed.
As they smiled and pointed and called my name:

“Welcome Ali! I’m the RA Emily.
Here’s your room code, packet, ID.
Head to Hogan and fill out some forms,
Then try out Kimball and see your new dorm!”

Where was Hogan? Or Kimball? I hadn’t a clue!
But a fellow ‘Sader came to my rescue
“Hey, I’m Dan. I’ll show you the way!
‘Saders will help each other any day.”

When back at the dorm I met my roommate
“Hi, I’m Ali.” “Hey! I’m Mary Kate!”
So this is where I’ll live for nearly a year.
This room seems foreign and rather austere.

Without further ado I unpacked my stuff
Did I bring too much or not enough?
Where should I hang my pictures and lights?
I’ll put the fan here…No…that’s not right.

When this daunting task was finally complete,
I headed to Mass and took my seat.
When Mass was over, I hugged my mother,
My father and sister and big brother

We said good-bye and I was alone.
Now this is it. I’m on my own.
A little bit lost, I see a friend
And know this is a beginning, not an end.

One year later, I smile as I sit and reflect
HC was better than I could ever expect.
But that’s for another little poem
For now I’m just waiting to go back home.

Welcome class of 2018. I look forward to meeting you!
Ali
